Registration information
From July 1 2010 Australia will implement a National Registration Policy for all Health Professionals; a National Board for each Professional Group
will manage the policies and registration process. There are key requirements that will apply for all health professionals, English competency as per
policy, 100 point ID as per policy, a Police Clearance Certificate will be required from any country you have lived in for more than 12 months in the last
10 years and an Australian AFP report will be required. Certificates of Good Standing / Registration (COGS / CORS) will be required for all locations
you have been registered in the last 5 years.

Specialist assessment is conducted by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) and the relevant Specialist College. Positions for Specialists need to be in an Area of Need location, hospitals can apply to have a position classified AON where they can demonstrate they have been unable to recruit a local specialist to the position and they have college support to employ a specialist whose primary medical degree was gained overseas.
Completion of a specialist training program and Fellowship are requirements for specialist recognition in Australia if you are unsure of how your qualifications fit with that requirement please send us your CV to review.
Hospitals receive funding through reimbursement for your services via a provider number this is issued for a specific location. Overseas trained doctors are required to work for 10 years in an AON location. Permanent residency is available when you meet college requirements for your Australian Fellowship.
Specialists are only required to meet college requirements to practice in their specialty, they are not required to take the Australian general medical exams.From July 2008 all overseas medical graduates applying for non specialist positions are required to have their Competency Authority Certificate or AMC MCQ, doctors applying for PHO level positions or higher are also required to take have a Pre-Employment Structured Clinical Interview, this can be in person or by video conferencing and occurs prior to applying for registration.
1-3 years post grad positions are generally managed by the State Health Departments, applicants apply on line and recruitment programs are advertised in June each year for a December start.

4-9 years post grad is PHO / Registrar level and positions are available in regional locations.
Doctors wanting to gain permanent residency are eligible on completion of the CA requirements or on the Standard Pathway (AMC MCQ) the AMC Clinical exam and 12 month rotations.
The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners has introduced 5 categories for assessment:
Category 1 is substantial comparability on the Specialist Pathway and will provide reciprocal Fellowship
recognition for some qualifications.
Category 2 is partial comparability and registration on the Specialist Pathway
Category 3 recognises some post graduate training with conditions prior to registration on the Specialist
Pathway
Category 4 Competency Authority plus min 3-5 years GP experience in a private GP practice
Category 5 Standard Pathway plus min 3- 5years GP experience in a private GP Practice
Category 4 & 5 Doctors are required to have their time overseas assessed and complete a minimum of 12 months in an Australia General Practice prior to eligibility for the RACGP exam (min 5 years in total is required for eligibility)
GP's receive income on a fee for service basis through their provider number which is location specific, higher reimbursement is paid to GP’s who have their Fellowship Overseas doctors are subject to a moratorium on their provider number which requires them to work in a District of Workforce Shortage (DWS), the period varies from 5 – 10years depending on the location you are working in.
Nursing positions are available however all nurses requiring visa sponsorship are
employed as a Level 1 – salary range 1 – 8 years experience and the roles are clinical.
From July 1 National Registration will allow you to work in any State without additional registration, nurses with current registration will automatically be moved to the National Registration and renewal will be due at the current registration expiry date.
Assessment by your specialist organisation is required prior to registration and being
offered a position of employment. Please contact us for specific information on your occupation.Salaries in the public sector are set under State Awards, these awards are renegotiated on a regular basis and cover base salary and all employment conditions.
Salary levels are based on years of experience. Private sector salaries are similar to public sector salaries. Specialists & GP’s receive income on a fee for service basis.
